26TH MARINE REGIMENT
CORPORAL

World War II
Iwo Jima

Joseph Peccoralo was one of three Hackensack friends who grew up together and joined the Marines during World War II. They were all wounded on Iwo Jima. He received the Purple Heart after being wounded on Iwo Jima.

Corporal Joseph Peccoralo graduated Hackensack High School sometime in the 1930's or early 1940's and was assigned to the same attack transport ship as Platoon Sergeant
Michael Krachkovsky
(spelled various ways), who graduated from Hackensack High School in 1939. They were separated during the invasion of Iwo Jima when they were assigned to different
landing crafts.

The third friend was Carl Padovano, who landed on another part of the island with the fifth Marine Division, which was to fight for Mount Surabachi . One can read about their story 20 years later in the February 19, 1965 article from the Bergen Evening Record. Joseph Peccoralo did another interview for The Record 40 years later in an article on February 19, 1985.

When Joe Peccoralo came home, he became a police officer for the city of Hackensack .
